Alberta RNs renew an annual practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30 for the practice year beginning Oct. 1.
The Health Professions Act requires CRNA to provide a continuing competence program. Registrants who hold a practice permit and provide nursing services during the practice year must meet Continuing Competence Program (CCP) requirements and attest to completion at renewal (keep records for five years; submit only if audited).
CCP includes self-assessment against Practice Standards, peer/colleague feedback, a learning plan tied to a Practice Standards indicator, a learning activity, evaluation/reflection, and any CRNA-required education.
Currency of practice (not CE contact hours): at least 450 nursing practice hours in the 2 practice years before application or at least 1,125 hours (or another approved pathway) within the 5 practice years before application.

Special Requirements

Continuing Competence Program (CCP) — required annually if you held a practice permit and provided nursing services during the practice year:
  • Self-assessment against CRNA Practice Standards
  • Documented feedback from a colleague/stakeholder
  • Learning plan tied to a Practice Standards indicator
  • Learning activity, implementation assessment, and reflection
  • Any CRNA-required education
  • Retain records for five years
Currency of practice: ≥450 nursing practice hours in the prior 2 practice years or ≥1,125 hours (or another approved pathway) within the prior 5 practice years.
CRNA does not set a fixed number of continuing-education contact hours for RN permit renewal.
