British Columbia - Canada Continuing Education Requirements

British Columbia RNs renew registration annually with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
For the renewal application, nurses will be expected to:

• Update your employment history and contact information
• Provide information about any criminal charges or convictions over the past year
• Consent to a criminal record check (if applicable)
• Report your practice hours from the preceding year
• Meet your quality assurance (Personal Practice Review) requirements
• Acknowledge you have read and understand all of the consent and declaration requirements
• Pay your renewal fee

Practice hours: RNs must practise at least 450 hours in the two years preceding renewal or a minimum of 1,125 hours total in the five years preceding renewal.
BCCNM does not prescribe a fixed number of continuing-education contact hours; RNs must complete the annual Personal Practice Review (PPR) quality assurance requirements by March 31.

Quality Assurance – Personal Practice Review (PPR) must be completed by March 31 each registration year (unless deferred/exempted):

• Self-assessment against BCCNM standards
• Peer feedback (or practice reflection if peer feedback is not possible)
• Professional development plan with at least two goals, including one focused on jurisprudence (anti-discrimination, cultural safety, and anti-racist practice)
• Evaluation of learning and its impact on practice

Certified practice RNs must also include a certification-specific learning goal.
Practice hours (not CE contact hours): at least 450 hours in the two years preceding renewal or 1,125 hours in the five years preceding renewal (or an approved alternative pathway).
BCCNM does not set a fixed number of continuing-education contact hours for RN renewal.

Licensed Practical Nurses in British Columbia are regulated by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Registration renews annually by March 31. BCCNM does not require a fixed number of continuing education contact hours; registrants must complete annual Quality Assurance (Personal Practice Review) activities and meet practice-hours currency requirements.

No fixed CE contact-hour mandate. Annual Quality Assurance — Personal Practice Review — includes self-assessment against BCCNM standards, peer feedback (or practice reflection), a professional development plan with at least two goals (one focused on jurisprudence including anti-discrimination, cultural safety, and anti-racist practice), and evaluation of learning impact.
Practice hours currency: at least 450 hours in the two years before renewal or 1,125 hours in the five years before renewal (alternatives listed by BCCNM if hours are short).

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are regulated by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
NPs renew registration annually. The renewal application asks NPs to update employment/contact information, report practice hours, meet quality assurance (Personal Practice Review) requirements, complete declarations, and pay the renewal fee.
Practice hours: at least 300 hours in the year preceding renewal (minimum 100 clinical) or 900 hours in the three years preceding renewal (at least 300 clinical).
BCCNM does not prescribe a fixed number of continuing-education contact hours; NPs must complete annual PPR, including a critical chart review.

Quality Assurance – Personal Practice Review (PPR) by March 31 each year:
