When visiting the state of Michigan, it’s hard to not notice the state’s natural beauty. From the seemingly never-ending forested regions, to the vast, open great lakes that surround the state, the rural areas make for a great get-away from urban life.
As with many rural areas, sometimes jobs can be scarce. However, Michigan’s rural areas are having the opposite problem – they need more nurse practitioners to join the workforce. A grant, supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is helping fund several universities to produce more students that are willing to work as nurse practitioners in Michigan’s rural or underserved areas.
In order to become a nurse practitioner, there’s typically several years of schooling, as well as gaining years of experience, plus – of course – obtaining a state license and certification. First, you will need to become a registered nurse and earn your bachelor’s degree. Next, you’ll need to gain experience and earn your graduate degree. Lastly, you will have to meet licensing requirements and pass a national certification examination.
While all of this seems to be a lot to take on in order to become a nurse practitioner, it’s necessary as they usually take on additional responsibilities, such as diagnosing and treating patients, as well as perform procedures. So, if you’ve ever considered moving to Michigan, or currently live there now, consider taking this career path as the state looks to hire more workers in this particular field.
Michigan Registered Nurse (RN)

RNs shall earn twenty-five (25) contact hours of continuing education every two (2) years for licensure renewal.
Special Requirements
- Pain Management:
- Two (2) of the required twenty-five (25) contact hours must be in pain and pain symptom management.
- Human Trafficking:
- Licensees, or individuals seeking licensure, must complete a one-time training course in human trafficking prior to obtaining a nursing license. Continuing education (CE) credits on human trafficking are not required for nurses, however, it is a training requirement that can be met through a continuing education activity.
- Implicit Bias:
- New Applicants for licensure or registration are required to have completed two (2) hours of implicit bias training within the five (5) years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration.
- Renewing licensees and registrants are required to complete one (1) hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license cycle.

Michigan Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

APRNs, CNMs, CNPs, CRNPs, and RNPs shall maintain their current RN license by earning twenty-five (25) contact hours of continuing education every two (2) years for licensure renewal.

Michigan Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

CNAs shall earn twelve (12) contact hours of continuing education every year for certificate renewal.
Special Requirements
Additional Requirements to be eligible for bi-annual certificate renewal:
- An attestation that within the last 24-consecutive-month renewal period the individual worked a minimum of 40 hours as a certified nurse aide providing nursing or nursing-related services for monetary compensation
- Beginning not less than 12 months after the effective date of these rules, an attestation that the individual has completed at least 12 hours annually of continuing education within the renewal period.
- Continuing education must ensure the continuing competence of the nurse aide and must include abuse, neglect, and care plan training. A free, 1-hour version is offered by the state here
- Implicit Bias:
- New Applicants for licensure or registration are required to have completed two (2) hours of implicit bias training within the five (5) years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration.
- Renewing licensees and registrants are required to complete one (1) hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license cycle.
- Ensure the continuing competence of all employed nurse aides,
- Be a minimum of 12 hours per year.
- Comply with the requirements listed in 42 CFR 483.95.
