When you sit down at the table to eat a meal, do you ever think about where it came from? Most people don’t. As a matter of fact, the agricultural industry employs nearly a quarter of the state’s entire population. Farmland in North Dakota takes up nearly 90 percent of the state’s land, which is about 39 million acres.

The state of North Dakota is the nation’s leading producer of spring wheat, durum wheat, sunflower, barley, oats, lentils, honey, edible beans, canola, and flaxseed. All these ingredients that produced throughout the state are an important part of eating a balanced diet.

As a nurse in the healthcare industry, it’s not always easy getting the right diet in when you’re working long shifts and late nights. However, it’s vital to your patients that you stay healthy. So, when making trips to the grocery store, it’s best to avoid foods that have a long list of ingredients, artificial colors, preservatives, and trans-fat. Instead, try to fresh, lean meats, whole grains and whole fruits and vegetables. And remember, many of those whole grains that end up on your plate, most likely came from a farm in the great state of North Dakota.
