Oklahoma Registered Nurse (RN)

24 hours · Every two years

Multiple options to renew for this profession and state.
Complete one or more of the following requirements within the past two years prior to the expiration date of the license:
  • Employment in a position that requires a registered nurse/practical nurse license with verification of at least 520 work hours; or
  • Completion of at least twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education applicable to nursing practice;  or
  • Current certification in a nursing specialty area; or
  • Completion of a Board-approved refresher course; or
  • Completion of at least six (6) academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework at the licensee’s current level of licensure or higher.

Oklahoma Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

RN Licensure must be maintained for APRNs. To do this, complete one or more of the following requirements within the past two years prior to the expiration date of the license:
  • Employment in a position that requires a registered nurse/practical nurse license with verification of at least 520 work hours; or
  • Completion of at least twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education applicable to nursing practice; or
  • Current certification in a nursing specialty area; or
  • Completion of a Board-approved refresher course; or
  • Completion of at least six (6) academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework at the licensee's current level of licensure or higher

Special Requirements

APRNs with prescriptive authority:
  • HB 2298, which became effective November 1, 2025 states that Advanced Practice Registered Nurses that meet the requirements enumerated in the bill, are eligible to apply for independent prescriptive authority recognition.
    • APRNs who have NOT been granted independent prescriptive authority by the Board:
      • Minimum of fifteen (15) contact hours, or one academic credit hour of education, or the equivalent, in pharmacotherapeutics, clinical application and use of pharmacological agents in the prevention of illness, and in the restoration and maintenance of health.
      • Two (2) hours of education in pain management or two (2) hours of education in opioid use or addiction, are also required unless the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse has demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Board that the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse does not currently hold a valid federal Drug Enforcement Administration registration number.
    • APRNs who HAVE been granted independent prescriptive authority by the Board:
      • Minimum of forty (40) hours of Category I continuing medical education hours.
      • Two (2) hours of education in pain management or two (2) hours of education in opioid use or addiction, are also required unless the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse has demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Board that the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse does not currently hold a valid federal Drug Enforcement Administration registration number.
Oklahoma Continuing Education for Prescriptive Authority Recognition Renewal

CRNAs must complete a minimum of eight (8) CE in advanced pharmacology relating to the administration of anesthesia.

Oklahoma Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

To renew your certification, you must have worked at least eight (8) hours during the two (2) year timeframe of your certification. 

No continuing education is required for CNA renewal. Please check with your facility/employer to ensure your continuing education courses are accepted.
