If you love wide-open spaces and rugged mountain terrains, then the state of Wyoming might be the right place for you to call home. Wyoming, also called the “Cowboy State”, and is home to Yellowstone National Park, which is the first designated national park in the world. With all these wide-open spaces, it should come as no surprise that Wyoming tops the chart as our nation’s least populated state.
As with many other states seeing the same trend, Wyoming has also come face-to-face with the looming shortage of nurses throughout the state. With less students graduating with nursing degrees coupled with more people becoming retirement age, this has created the perfect storm for a nursing shortage to take place in the Cowboy State.
In fact, according to a study conducted by the AARP, the state is expecting to see an explosive growth in the elderly population. By 2055, Wyoming’s population of people age 85 and older are expected to grow by 227 percent and make up more than 5 percent of the state’s population, which is a 20 percent greater growth rate than the national average.
As the state puts effort into combating the shortage looming in the near future of the nursing industry, the Cowboy State hopes that one day more nursing professionals will want to call it home.
Wyoming Registered Nurse (RN)
- If employed for at least 400 hours in the past 2 years you do not need to complete any additional CEUs (continuing education hours).
- If employed 200 hours in the past 2 years you will need to complete 15 CEUs (continuing education hours).
- If employed less than 200 hours in the past 2 years you will need to complete 30 CEUs (continuing education hours).

Wyoming Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
An APRN shall demonstrate competency by submitting evidence of:
- Current national certification as an APRN in the recognized role and population focus area; or
- If recognized APRN in the State prior to July 1, 2005, and has maintained continuous recognition, but not nationally certified, the APRN shall submit evidence of:
- Completion of sixty (60) or more contact hours of continuing education related to the APRN's recognized role and population focus area; AND
- Completion of a minimum of 400 hours as an APRN in the last two (2) years
