Delaware Continuing Education Requirements

Per the Delaware Division of Health Care Quality, CEUs for CNAs license renewal must be completed thru Relias. Therefore, we are unable to provide continuing education for this state and profession.

• To qualify for recertification, CNAs are required to complete a minimum of 24 hours of approved continuing education (Relias CEUs), including 6 hours of Dementia training and 2 hours of training related to resident/patient abuse prevention/neglect and/or mistreatment. Relias provides a pre-selected package of classes that meet these requirements. In addition, CNAs must work a minimum of 64 hours for pay under the supervision of a nurse or physician during their certification period.
  • A minimum of 6 hours of dementia training
  • A minimum of 2 hours of patient abuse prevention/maltreatment training

• March 1 to February 28 (expiration date) of the previous odd-numbered years (2027-2029, etc.)
• June 1 to May 31 (expiration date) of the previous odd-numbered years (2027-2029, etc.)
• October 1 to September 30 (expiration date) of the previous odd-numbered years (2027-2029, etc.)

• Three (3) hours of CE in the area of substance abuse.
• One (1) hour recognition of and response to suspected or known sexual abuse, physical abuse, exploitation, trafficking, or domestic violence of vulnerable persons including, but not limited to, children, elders, or persons with intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities, or on the reporting obligations under the rules and regulations promulgated by the Board of Nursing, reporting of known or suspected child abuse or neglect under § 903 of Title 16, and any successors thereto, and any other mandatory reporting obligations required by the Board

To renew,  APRNs shall comply with the standards for RNs licensure by completing thirty (30) contact hours of continuing education and must attest that you have met one of the following practice requirements in the role and population focus area in which you are licensed:

• Practice of 1,500 hours over the past five years in the specialty, or
• Practice of 600 hours over the past two years in the specialty, or
• Graduation from the specialty program within the past two years.

If you have prescriptive authority, your prescriptive authority expires at the same time as your license. To renew prescriptive authority, you must attest to completing ten (10) hours of continuing education (CE) in pharmacology/pharmacotherapeutics in the past two years.

APRNs who have never practiced and graduated more than two (2) years prior to application must either complete a refresher program or complete twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education with twelve (12) hours in pharmacotherapeutics and twelve (12) hours in the clinical management of patients, all taken within one (1) year of submitting the application and complete 600 hours of supervised practice.

Starting Jan 2, 2024, a new NLC rule will be in effect. Nurses relocating to another compact state have 60 days from the time they move to apply for a new license by endorsement in a new primary state of residence.

The new rule (effective beginning January 2, 2024) reads:
402 (2) A multistate licensee who changes primary state of residence to another party state shall apply for a multistate license in the new party state within 60 days.

• APRNs who have active Controlled Substance registration, Two (2) hours in controlled substances prescribing practices, treatment of chronic pain, or other topics topics related to prescribing controlled substances. This requirement is due during each two (2) year renewal. This completion of this Mandatory Course is no longer accepted as continuing education credit and is provided only by the Division of Professional Regulation (Office of Controlled Substances).
• As part of RN license renewals the following is required: One (1) hour recognition of and response to suspected or known sexual abuse, physical abuse, exploitation, trafficking, or domestic violence of vulnerable persons including, but not limited to, children, elders, or persons with intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities, or on the reporting obligations under the rules and regulations promulgated by the Board of Nursing, reporting of known or suspected child abuse or neglect under § 903 of Title 16, and any successors thereto, and any other mandatory reporting obligations required by the Board.
• Two (2) hours in controlled substance prescribing practices are only available by the Division of Professional Regulation (Office of Controlled Substances) and does not count toward required 30 CEUs

LPNs shall complete twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education during your renewal period. Your renewal is due February 28th of even years.

An active license must be renewed in DELPROS before the expiration date. During renewal, you are asked to attest that you have completed the required continuing education units (24 hours) and that you have practiced Nursing at least 1,000 hours in the past five years or 400 hours in the past two years.

• Three (3) hours of CE in the area of substance abuse.
• One (1) hour recognition of and response to suspected or known sexual abuse, physical abuse, exploitation, trafficking, or domestic violence of vulnerable persons including, but not limited to, children, elders, or persons with intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities, or on the reporting obligations under the rules and regulations promulgated by the Board of Nursing, reporting of known or suspected child abuse or neglect under § 903 of Title 16, and any successors thereto, and any other mandatory reporting obligations required by the Board

Delaware does not require certification for medical assistants. However, many employers prefer to hire those who have earned certification.

HHAs shall attend at least twelve (12) hours annually of staff development activities which shall consist of in-service training programs, workshops or conferences related to home health care or specific needs of patients.

Annual training shall include but not be limited to:

• Instruction in how to assist patients to achieve maximum self-reliance through re-learning and modifying activities of daily living;
• Principles of good nutrition;
• Meal planning, food purchasing and preparation of meals, including special diets;
• Information on the emotional and physical problems accompanying illness, disability or aging;
• Principles and practices in maintaining a clean, healthy, pleasant and safe environment that encourages morale building and self-help;
• Items requiring referral to the clinical director, including changes in the patient's condition or family situation;
• Observation, reporting and documentation of patient status;
• Policies and objectives of the agency;
• Confidentiality of patient information;
• Patient rights;
• Principles of infection control;
• Verbal/non-verbal communication skills; and
• Principles of body mechanics.
• Dementia specific training that includes:
  • Communicating with persons diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia;
  • the psychological, social, and physical needs of those persons;
  • and safety measures which need to be taken with those persons.
