Kansas Continuing Education Requirements

RNs shall earn thirty (30) contact hours of continuing education every two years for licensure renewal.

LPNs shall earn thirty (30) contact hours of continuing education every two years for licensure renewal.

CNAs are required to perform 8 hours in a two-year period of activities of daily living. No continuing education is required.

APRNs shall earn thirty (30) contact hours of continuing education every two years for licensure renewal.

• Hours shall be related to the advanced practice registered nurse role.

Kansas Home Health Aides must be Kansas-certified nurse aides in good standing and complete an approved 20-hour home health aide course plus the state test.
To keep the CNA certification active, document at least eight (8) hours of qualifying work performing activities of daily living within each two-year period, with employer verification. KDADS updates an existing HHA certification along with the CNA. These are work/currency hours, not continuing-education contact hours. Separately, aides at Medicare-certified home health agencies must receive 12 hours of in-service training every 12 months.

Must maintain an active Kansas CNA in good standing (HHA cannot be active if CNA is inactive).
Currency: at least eight (8) hours of paid work performing activities of daily living in each two-year period, with employer employment verification (hours in a doctor’s office or clinic do not count).
If inactive: RN skills checklist at a LTC facility/hospital/school lab, or a 10-hour CNA refresher course; HOC then updates both CNA and HHA.

Kansas does not have any state requirements to practice as a medical assistant. However, most employers require medical assistants who have earned a certain level of competency through a formal course of education in medical assisting and national certification.
