Missouri Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Last Updated: Monday, August 19, 2024
APRNs must maintain their RN license (Missouri or multistate) and their national certification. If either of these expire, APRN licensure expires.

Special Requirements

In the state of Missouri, the APRN is not a license they are a Document of Recognition and does not have its own expiration date. What keeps your APRN active is making sure you renew your RN when it comes due and making sure we receive a copy of your certification each time you recertify. NURSYS will always give you the first expiration date between your RN and your APRN. This is because if your RN expires, so will your APRN. Once your RN renews out on NURSYS, then your APRN will also update.

For APRNs who are non-certified:

Provide evidence of eight-hundred (800) hours of clinical practice in the advanced practice nursing clinical specialty area within the past two (2) years. In order to meet this requirement, please submit a statement from your employer/supervisor on letterhead that includes their complete name, address and telephone number for each clinical setting employed within the past two (2) years, including specification of your clinical practice role and responsibilities (e.g. written job description) and the total number of clinical hours completed in each setting in order to account for the minimum total of eight-hundred (800) hours.

Provide documents showing a minimum of sixty (60) contact hours in your advanced practice nursing clinical specialty area offered by an accredited college/university within the past (2) years.

For APRNs applying for Controlled Substances Prescriptive Authority, ONE of the following is required:
  • Official final transcript that includes advanced pharmacology course
  • Letter from APRN program describing how pharmacology experience was integrated into the curriculum
  • Evidence of completion of a 3-hour graduate-level advanced pharmacology course within the last 5 years
  • Evidence of completion of 45 CE in pharmacology in the last 5 years
