Ohio, also known as the “Buckeye State”, is home to the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and is also the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World” with the famous amusement park, Cedar Point.
More recently, Ohio has also made some newsworthy appearance in the nursing industry with House Bill 144, which aims to outlaw that nurses have to work overtime as a condition of employment. By passing the law, which was introduced in March 2019, Ohio would be the 19th state to allow nurses the right to refuse overtime if they felt too fatigued or burnt out to continue their shift.
It’s no secret that shift work is demanding and that burnout is a real struggle in the workplace, and the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) supports the bill and hopes to see it to fruition. According to the ONA, even though the research was conducted linking work fatigue to errors, it was still a common practice in the state for RN’s to work mandatory hours past their regular ones, if scheduled. This bill would come as a blessing to many nurses who have been struggling with burnout in their careers, and would be beneficial for future nurses joining the workforce.
Ohio Registered Nurse (RN)

Special Requirements
One (1) contact hour of Category A:
- Category A is CE directly related to the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and the administrative rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing. To qualify as Category A, the CE must be approved by an Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) approver or be offered by an OBN approved provider unit headquartered in the state of Ohio.

Ohio Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

24 contact hours must be completed every two year renewal period.
Special Requirements
For the first period of renewal immediately following the initial issuance of the APRN license, the APRN is not required to complete any contact hours of CE.
CE contact hours must be completed on or between November 1, 2023, and October 31, 2025, to renew the APRN license by October 31, 2025.
APRNs must complete 24 hours of CE for each APRN license held. For CNPs, CNSs, CNMs, at least 12 of the 24 contact hours must include CE in advanced pharmacology. The 24 hours of CE required to renew each APRN license are in addition to the 24 hours of CE required to renew the RN license.
In addition to the above 24 hours of CE, a CNS who was originally issued a certificate of authority on or before December 31, 2000, who is not certified by a national certifying organization approved by the Board, must also obtain 12 hours of CE with content targeted to the CNSs area of practice.

Ohio Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

At least seven and one-half consecutive hours or eight hours in a forty-eight hour period of nursing and nursing-related services for compensation during the twenty-four month period immediately following either the date that the individual was placed on the registry or the most recent date of verified work.
